Abstract

1358701 Ladder support; universal joints T J LYONS Snr 6 May 1971 13601/71 Headings E1S and E2F A support for the lower end of a stile of a ladder comprises an elongate receptacle 12 for the stile end 16, and a base plate 14 on which the receptacle 12 is mounted by means of a universal joint 24, the receptacle having a plate 46 disposed transversely therein for abutting and supporting the end of the stile, which plate 46 is movable along the length of the receptacle to adjust the stile vertically. As shown, the universal joint comprises a ball member 20 formed integrally on the end of the receptacle 12, and a socket 26 pressed out of the base plate 14; the joint is assembled by inserting a stud 22 on the ball member 20 through an aperture 38 in the socket 26 and through a curved retaining washer 40 which is retained on the stud 22 by a pin 44. The stile end plate 46 has a shank 52 extending through a slot 54 in the receptacle and secured to a threaded collar 62 which is engaged on a screw 60 rotatably mounted in brackets 64, 66 extending from the receptacle, rotation of the screw 60 serving to raise or lower the plate 46. The base plate 14 may have non-slip material 78 on its underside.
