Abstract

1358653 Grinding HAWLEY MFG CORP 16 Oct 1972 47604/72 Heading B3D [Also in Division F4] Dust &c. generated at the periphery of the cutting wheel 22 of, for example, a swing grinder 20 is removed by an arrangement comprising an air scoop 33 connected to articulated conduit means 34 communicating with the interior of a continuously evacuated elongated duct 30 via a car 32 movable along the duct; the interior of the car 32 defines a chamber and carries equipment so co-operative with a flexible web 31 closing one wall of the duct that the chamber is always in open communication with the duct interior. The conduit means comprises a number of sections 35, 36, 38, 40, 42 and 44 interconnected by swivel connections 37, 39, 41, 43 and 46. The scoop 33 is suitably supported from the carriage 21 with its mouth tangential to the wheel 22 which is driven by a motor 24 and is provided with a guard 23. The swing grinder is suspended from above via a hanger rod 26 and ring 25, 27 whereby an operator may suitably rotate or reciprocate the carriage 2 and hence the wheel 22 via handle bar 28 to bring it into co-operative engagement with a workpiece 29. The scoop may be of rectangular cross-section (see Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) and comprises a plurality of sections of progressively increasing effective cross-sectional capacity.
