Abstract

1358604 Coating compositions containing inorganic and UF resin pigment particles CABOT CORP 29 July 1971 [30 July 1970] 35583/71 Heading C3R [Also in Division C4] A coating composition comprises a binder dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous slurry of pigment solids of which at least 50 wt. per cent are inorganic pigments of mean particle size below 2 Á and 2-25 wt. per cent are waterinsoluble, cross-linked urea-formaldehyde particles of BET specific surface of 15-100 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. Preferably the binder amounts to 4-35 wt. per cent of the suspended solids, which are 15- 60 wt. per cent of the composition. Suitable binders are starches and modified starches, optionally with casein, soya protein, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetate, butadiene-styrene copolymers or acrylic resins. The UF particles may be prepared in known fashion from 1-2 mols. CH 2 O per mol. urea using an acid catalyst, e.g. H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 , H 2 N.SO 3 H, ClCH 2 .COOH or ammonium acid sulphates, preferably in the presence of a protective colloid; preferably they have a BET surface of 50-75 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. and a mean agglomerate size of 2À0-3À5 Á. In the examples UF particles of UF ratio 1 : 1À25 are prepared using sulphamic acid catalyst, with and without a sodium carboxymethylcellulose colloid, and having BET surfaces of 53 and 26 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. respectively. Pigment mixtures containing kaolin clay and 7, 8 or 10 wt. per cent of UF particles are incorporated in amounts of 100- 133 p.b.w. into 100 p.b.w. of 20% aqueous oxidized starch or hydroxyethylated starch, and the product compositions are used to coat paper.
