1358562 Hair waving appliances A SARRA 28 June 1971 30237/71 Heading A4V [Also in Division B4] An appliance for use in permanent waving comprises a pair of legs hinged together about their mid-points, each leg having at one end a hollow jaw 1 with a flat metal pressing plate 3, the jaws being mounted on pivots 5 and there being a spring 17 acting on each jaw so that the plates 3 are biased to diverge outwardly, there being heating means within each jaw 1 capable of maintaining its plate in the temperature range 115 -130‹C. The appliance may have handles 20 and the heating means may each comprise an electric heating element 9 Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) controlled by a thermostat (6, 7) to give a chosen constant temperature at the plates determined by a control knob 4. Alternatively, each heating means comprises a stick (14) of solid compounds which react enothermically and which are such as to heat the jaw plates to the given temperature range. Each jaw may be lined with asbestos material (2) except at the plates and, in the embodiment incorporating chemical heating, apertures (16) are provided in each jaw for the flow of gases. The appliance is used on hair moistered with an ammoniacal fluid to give a permanent wave and each jaw plate 3 may have a curved entension (3a) so that in conjunction with a metal cylinder (18) on which the hair is wound, the appliance may be used to give a curled wave.
