Abstract

1358552 Soil cultivators TEXAS INDUSTRIES Inc 12 May 1971 [13 May 1970] 14568/71 Heading A1B A harrow has a trailing harrow 45 and tined soil working members 6 which are oscillated about respective vertical shafts 4 by two connecting rods 21 reciprocated by a driving arm 23 of a crank 36 which is driven via a gearbox 34 from a tractor's power take off point. The tines 5 of each member 6 are held in a cruciform pattern and the roller 45 is connected to a main frame 1 (Fig. 1) by arms 44 which pivot about pins 43 so that their angular setting determines the working depth of the tines 5. Constructional details. The frame 1 comprises two hollow beams 2 which have sets of bearings 3 on their upper and lower surfaces to carry the shafts 4 and the tines which are of square cross-section are clamped between two plates 9, 10 by bolts 14A. The roots are further held in position by adhesive. The distance between the tops of two opposed tines 5 is greater than the distance between adjacent shafts 4 (which is about 30 cms.) so that adjacent members 6 working overlapping strips of soil. The upper ends of shafts 4 have arms 14 (Fig. 1) with vertical stub shafts 16 which are journalled to two connecting rods 21, offset relative to one another as shown in Fig. 1 and which extend parallel to the frames 2. Pairs of channel bars form each connecting rod 21, the webs of the bars having embossed projections to receive the bearings for stub shafts 16. The trailing connecting rod 21 has an additional bearing to receive a pivot pin 22 (Fig. 1) of driving arm 23 which is reciprocated by rotary crank 36. A coupling member 27 is secured at front centre of frame 1 so that the cultivator can be connected to the three point lifting device of the towing vehicle and the arrangement is such that the rearmost tines are spaced at a distance less than 25 cms. behind the vertical plane containing of the coupling points of member 27. A further coupling member 28 is secured at the rear centre of frame 1, having plates 31, 32, each plate 31 having a recess and pawl 56 urged into engagement with stops 55A by springs 55 so that a further agricultural machine can be towed behind the cultivator. Roller construction. The ends of the roller 45 are formed by annular plates (see Fig. 1) whose outer peripheries are interconnected by eight horizontal tubes 51. Seven vertical circular plates 52 are spaced at regular intervals across the roller to stiffen the tubes 51 and have recesses 51A (Fig. 3) to prevent adhesion of soil. The two plates 52 closest to either end of the roller 45 are secured to corresponding bearings which receive stub shafts 50 secured to respective arms 44. Each stub shaft 50 is provided alongside the corresponding support arm 44 with an outwardly extending convex cap shaped plate 53 acting as a screen the edge of which is located inside and cooperates with a corresponding ring 54 attached to the respective end of the roller to protect the bearings 49 from damaging contaminants. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specifications 1226679, 1226680 and 1266432
