Abstract

1357965 Facsimile reproducer INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 27 July 1971 [4 Sept 1970] 35064/71 Heading H4F [Also in Divisions B6 and H1] A latent image is formed on a dielectric substrate by generating a stream of ions and selectively deflecting the stream by a gas stream either to fall on the substrate or away from the substrate. A chamber 1 includes insulating walls 1f, 1s, 1sa, 1b and an insulating tap 2 which accommodates an electrode 5 charged to high voltage with respect to a grounded conductive base-plate 3 to generate a corona discharge. An aperture 6 in the base-plate 3 communicates with a passage 16 in a head portion 13. A passage 17 communicates with the passage 16 and conducts a stream of gas to deflect the stream of ionized gas in the passage 16 when required. As shown, the deflected stream passes to a drain 18, but in an alternative embodiment the deflected stream is directed toward the substrate (not shown). A plurality of electrodes may be assembled in a single chamber, each electrode being associated with a respective outlet passage (Fig. 2, not shown). In place of a corona discharge, α, #, #, X or U.V. radiation, triboelectricity or microwave breakdown may be employed to ionize the gas in the chamber.
