Abstract

1357837 Data transmission; coding COMPAGNIE INDUSTRIELLE DES TELECOMMUNICATIONS CIT-ALCATEL 13 Oct 1972 [13 Oct 1971] 47342/72 Heading H4P The circuit of Fig. 4, converts a binary signal A (waveforms, Fig. 5, not shown) to a five-level signal Y whose levels are alternately 0, 1, 0, 1, &c. This enables a lower bandwidth channel to be used for the same binary bit rate. In Fig. 5, the two parallel channels, which are identical except for an inverter 11, include divide-by-two circuits 12, 13, 17, 18, and AND gates 14, 15 and 19, 20 responsive to complementary outputs of dividers 13, 18. Inverters 16, 21 and the gates 14, 19 feed an adding circuit 22. The output amplifier 23 may in addition (Fig. 8, not shown) have e.m.f. sources 29, 30 gated at 31, 32 to its input by monostables 27, 28 controlled by threshold circuits 25, 26, in order to boost the peak levels of the signal Y (Figs. 9, 10, not shown) prior to transmission, and thereby reduce signal degradation during transmission. A demodulator (Fig. 6, not shown) reproduces the binary signals by two successive full-wave rectification steps, and uses transformers and diodes.
