In a data transmission system equal-length blocks of data are recoded into blocks of like length, each recoded block having one half of it the inverse of the other half, and all blocks having the same fundamental frequency. Four-bit blocks a, b, c, d, Fig. 6 (not shown), are used in the embodiment described, and are converted to four-level four-bit length blocks +A, +B, -A, -B, the conversion being A = 2a+b, B = 2c+d, where a . . . d are + 1v for binary 1 and - 1v for binary 0. The receiver includes means, not described, for recoding the four-level data to the original binary form, and also means for synchronizing sampling means which operates during only two of the four bit-periods in a received block. It is a characteristic of the received data that the signal level has values only of Œ3nV or Œ1nV, and has no D.C. component. Synchronization may be by way of the data itself or by use of a periodic sync. signal. The circuits for both systems are described.
