1357759 Making pressurized gas bottles; swaging; welding by pressure MANNESMANNROHREN-WERKE AG 25 Aug 1971 [16 Sept 1970] 39994/71 Headings B3A B3R and B3H A process for the manufacture of steel pressure-bottles whose bottom and neck portions are formed by swaging and pressure welding comprises the steps of swaging a heated end of a rotating cylindrical tube length 12 in dies 2, 3 to form the bottom 16 of the bottle, interrupting the tube feed and opening the dies prior to closing the bottom completely, reheating the region around opening 15 in the bottom until melting occurs, gas blasting the opening via a nozzle 18, and then immediately closing the opening by further swaging. Generally hemispherical dies are arranged in pairs at right angles to each other, the dies 2, 3 being held in guides 4-7. A die cavity 8, 9 is provided with a flash duct made up of sectors 10, 11 for receiving forged-out surplus material The tube 12 is held coaxially with the die axis 1 by clamping jaws 13, 14 which effect both the feeding and rotation of the tube When the feeding is interrupted a burner 17 with heating nozzles 19 is used to reheat the periphery of the opening. After one or two revolutions of the tube an oxygen blast 20 is directed at the opening, for a further revolution, independent of the reheating operation. The burner, which is swingable about the die axis, is then withdrawn and the bottom is closed by further hammering.
