Abstract

1357411 Valves FLUID DEVICES Ltd 25 Jan 1972 [1 Feb 1971] 3646/71 Heading F2V A valve assembly controlling a doubleacting ram 11 has four main valves 1-4 controlled by common pilot valve 5 which in the position shown (Fig. 1) closes valves 1, 3 and opens valves 2, 4 allowing fluid to flow to the left side of the ram and exhaust from the right side, these connections being reversed when the pilot valve is shifted to an alternative position. The main valves may be defined by a diaphragm 27 (Fig. 5) loaded against circular or non- circular seats 32 by one or a pair of springs 31 in pilot chambers supplied and exhausted by a pilot spool 44 (Fig. 3) working in a sleeve 42 whose radial passages are sealed by a tube 43 contacted by the base of a solenoid actuator 23 so that the tube and the sleeve are pressed against a seal. A port plate (26) at the base of the assembly provides an inlet port communicating with the annulus around the seats 32 of valves 2, 3, an exhaust port communicating with the central passage through the seats of valves 1, 4 and work ports communicating respectively with the central passage through the seat of valve 2 or 3 and the annulus around the seat of valve 1 or 4. The inlet and exhaust ports also connect with the pilot valve. In modifications, the pilot spool can be operated by a pair of solenoids and be biased to a central position closing all the main valves, check valves 15, 16 (Fig. 1) then being provided. Alternatively the pilot spool can be operated manually or by fluid pressure. Each main valve may alternatively have a transverse sill engageable by the diaphragm instead of an annular seat, or a slidable lift valve member may be used, such member optionally abutting an upper seat in the open position to sustain pilot pressure. In each case, the pilot spool is arranged to initiate closure of the open main valves prior to initiating opening of the closed main valves. When non circular valve seats are used, the main valves may be disposed in a single row, the seats preferably being rectangular with radiused ends.
