Abstract
1357194 Strengthening glass KOMBINAT TECHNISCHES GLAS ILMENAU VEB 22 July 1971 34467/71 Heading C1M Glass is strengthened by exchange of alkali metal ions from surface regions by larger alkali metal ions from an ion source at temperatures at or below the transformation point of the glass and in an electric field, at least the cathode space of the ion source containing a compound selected from potassium bifluoride; potassium fluoride; sodium fluoride; potassium boron trifluoride; sodium boron trifluoride or fine potassium dihydrogen phosphate; sodium dihydrogen phosphate; potassium metaphosphate; sodium metaphosphate and potassium hydrogen sulphate. The preferred ion source is a fused potassium nitrate bath and the concentration of the added compound is between 0À25 and 7À5% by weight. In examples, vessels and tubes of glasses within the following ranges in percentages by weight were treated: SiO 2 75À6-80À9; B 2 O 3 7-12À4; Al 2 O 3 2À3-5À1; BaO 0 or 3À7; CaO 0À2-1À2; MgO 0 or 0À1; K 2 O 0-1À2; Na 2 O 3À5-6À3. In one of the examples the passage of current was without reverse of polarity but in two examples, the polarity was reversed.
