Abstract

135,665. Blunt, W. E. Deo. 16, 1918. Grab-forks.-The grab-fork has a frame built up of transverse plates 1 with bent-over ends connected by side plates 3 supported from a top plate 4 by struts 5. The top plate carries a hook or eyelet 7 for attachment to a crane, derrick, &c. The fork-arms 13 are mounted on the end plates 3 by pivots 12, each lateral pair of forkarms being connected by a load-engaging angleiron 14, and the opposed pairs being connected by safety chains 27 attached to hooks 28. The slotted inner ends of the fork-arms engage the ends of a plate 19 slidable in slots in plates 10 depending from the top plate 4. The plate 19 is centrally pivoted to the armature bar 20 of an electro-magnet arranged in a casing 22 secured to the plates 10. The fork-arms are so weighted that they are normally in the closed position shown in Fig. 4. By exciting the electro-magnet, the arms are opened to the load-engaging position and are retained in that position after the current has been cut-off, by means of a rotatable locking-rod 24<a>, which can be operated bv a handle 26 to displace the cut away part 25, Fig. 5, so that the rod engages a recess in the armature rod 26 and locks the fork-arms in the open position. The electro-magnet may be arranged to close the fork arms instead of opening them.
