Abstract

1356414 Cathode-ray tube displays ELLIOTT BROS (LONDON) Ltd 11 Sept 1972 [9 Sept 1971] 42109/71 Heading H4T In a computer controlled cathode-ray tube display system employing a digital differential analyser technique for displaying lines the incremented DX, DY deflections are produced by respective counter registers X1, Y1 (Fig. 1) which receive the "overflow" from respective accumulator registers Q1, A1 in which incremental quantities derived from the main memory 10 of the computer are inserted under the control of a microprogram control unit 14, the memory 10 also holding the start position co-ordinates XO, YO together with a number indicative of the length of the line to be displayed. By thus employing the computer memory to hold the X and Y deflection incremental quantities and the line length data a saving is made in the number of register required in the display system. In the operation of the system the microprogram control unit 14 operates, as depicted in Fig. 2, to: (1) Clear A1 and Q1; (2) Read the start position co-ordinate XO into register X1; (3) Read the start position co-ordinate Y0 into register Y1; (4) Read the line length count into register T1 and after testing (5) to discover if register T1 has not been counted down to zero (which mould indicate end of line) holds (6) the system until the first point has been displayed. The system then goes through steps (7), (8) and (9) to add the X and Y increments to register Q1 and A1 and to decrement register T1 by one count and continues to repeat the sequence (5) to (9) until the end of the line is indicated by zero count in register T1. Data may be inserted in the memories via register B1. The display system may be used in an aircraft to present flight control and navigation information to the pilot and instead on display straight lines cursive symbols may be drawn by suitable modification of the microprogram.
