Abstract
1356301 Carbonitride alloys TELEDYNE INDUSTRIES Inc 2 July 1971 [3 Nov 1970] 31225/71 Heading C7D Carbonitride alloys of the formula wherein M is vanadium, niobrium or tantalum, L is boron or oxygen, mole fraction v is from 0 to 0À05, x from 0À25 to 0À70, t from 0 to 0À07 when L is boron and from 0 to 0À04 when L is oxygen, y is greater than zero but less than 0À50, and the stoichiometric parameter z is from 0À25 to 0À45 are rapidly cooled from the melt to provide a fine-grained lamellar microstructure consisting of a titanium-rich carbonitride phase bonded by a tungsten-rich refractory metal phase. Tungsten can be partly substituted by molybdenum, rhenium or chromium and titanium by tirconium and/or hafrium. The constituents can be arc melted and then cast in water-cooled moulds or moulds of refractory materials. The nitrogen can be incorporated by adding titanium nitride to the melt or by melting under a nitrogen atmosphere. The cooling step should proceed at rates faster than 20C. per second.
