Abstract

1356004 Laminates; seaming EASTMAN KODAK CO 19 Aug 1971 [19 Aug 1970] 39073/71 Headings B5N B5B and B5K [Also in Divisions B2 and G2] A laminate, suitable for use in the production of a photographic film or magnetic tape, comprises a polyester base having coated on each side thereof a dissimilar polyester copolymer comprising units derived from (1) at least one aromatic dicarboxylic acid and (2) at least two diols, 5-50 mole per cent of the diols being of the formula HO-CH 2 -R-CH 2 -OH in which R is a branched chain alkylene group. The dissimilar polyester cooplymer may be applied to both surfaces of the polyester base, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate sheet, in a volatile organic solvent or by extrusion simultaneously with the production of the base. The layers of dissimilar polyester copolymer may have a thickness of “ to 5 mils. In the examples the polyester base is of polyethylene terephthalate and the dissimilar polyester copolymer layers are of poly-(ethylene:2, 2-dimethyl-1, 3-trimethylene:1, 4-cyclohexylene dimethylene terephthalate), poly - (ethylene:2 - n - butyl - 2- ethyl - 1, 3 - trimethylene :1, 4 - cyclo hexylene dimethylene terephthalate), poly-(ethylene:2- ethyl - 2 - n - butyl - trimethylene terephthalate), poly - (ethylene :2 - methyl - 2 - propyl - 1, 3-trimethylene terephthalate), poly-(ethylene:2- ethyl - 2 - isobutyl - 1, 3 - trimethylene terephthalate) or poly-(ethylene:2,2-dimethyl-1, 3- trimethylene terephthalate). The laminate produced may be spliced to itself or to a cellulose triacetate support using an organic solvent, e.g. methylene chloride optionally in admixture with acetone, which may contain the dissimilar polyester copolymer or other thickener, or by heatsealing techniques.
