Abstract
1355831 Flame trap vents POST OFFICE 22 March 1972 [22 March 1971] 7492/71 Heading A5A [Also in Division H1] A flame trap gas vent for devices which emit combustible gas, particularly secondary cells, comprises screw-threaded stem 1 and sealing washer 2 for detachably mounting the vent on the device, and plastics housing 3 providing a serpentine path for the gas and enclosing porous flame barrier 4 through which the gas must pass. Housing 3 is constructed as a two-part moulding having an outer section consisting of solid discord cap 5 from which inner and outer cylinders 6, 7 depend, and an inner section consisting of stepped cylindrical base 8 from which chimney 9 extends upwards. The vented gases thus traverse the serpentine path consisting of chimney 9, and channels 11, 12, as arrowed, before passing out via barrier 4, which is of 50Á pore size, and slits 18 in outer case 7. Barrier 4 is mounted in concentric grooves 15, 16 in housing 3. Plastic cement at 17 seals the outer or inner parts of 3. Trough 13 in base 8 collects moisture from the gas and returns it to the cell via drainholes 14. The housing may consist of polypropylene or a polycarbonate. The porous barrier may consist of a sintered glass honeycomb or a sintered polyethylene cylinder.
