Abstract
1355773 Registering webs ROCKFORD SERVO CORP 14 Aug 1972 [20 Sept 1971] 37859/72 Heading B8R [Also in Division G3] Control apparatus for laterally positioning with respect to a web path, a web engaging unit 10, e.g. a web roll stand from which a web is unwound and fed to a slitting roller 11, comprises an electrical, e.g. photo-electric, web position sensor 31, a valve operator 48, 49 responsive to the electrical signals from the sensor 31 to move a pneumatic valve 55 for controlling the fluid pressure applied by a pneumatic pump 75 to a pressure responsive wall 67 of a pneumatic operator 33, and an hydraulic servovalve 34 actuated by the movable wall 67 for reversibly supplying hydraulic fluid to an hydraulic motor 35 which moves the web engaging unit 10. Alternatively, the web engaging unit may be a web processing unit, e.g. the roller 11, but in either case correct register is obtained between the web and unit. The photoelectric sensor may detect deviations from a printed line L or other matter on the web, a pneumatic web edge sensor 36 being optionally cut into the pneumatic control circuit when required by electrically operated valves 116, 117. Additionally, a pneumatic roll stand position sensor 37 or a pneumatic manual valve may be cut in when required. The photo-electric sensor may be of the reflection or transmission type. The electrical valve operator comprises a coil 48 which attracts a spring biased arm 55 from the orifice of a pneumatic conduit 59 for reducing the pressure applied to the wall 67 by pump 75 via conduits 77, 81. The wall 67 is connected to a valve element of the hydraulic servo-valve 34, the element having spaced spools 64a, 64b which control the hydraulic flow from an inlet conduit 87, connected to an hydraulic pump 85, to outlet conduits 92a, 92b connected to the motor 35, the element normally being held in the null position by a spring 98 adjustable by a screw 99, the servo-valve 34 is held in an hydraulic fluid reservoir tank 61.
