G = modulus of elasticity. d max = maximum diameter of wire. d o = minimum diameter of wire. D=average diameter of the coil spring turns. The progressive part of the force-deflection characteristic is required to satisfy the following equation where X max is the total displacement of the spring over the whole of the progressive part, P max is the force corresponding to the displacement X max , X is the displacement representing a portion of the progressive part, and P is the force corresponding to the displacement X. With the truncated ogive wire the torsional shearing stress has the same value at any point along the wire.
