Abstract
1355444 Preparing gold powder E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 20 Oct 1971 48746/71 Heading C7D A process for preparing gold powder having a controlled particle size and shape comprises reducing a gold salt in solution with a mixture of hydroquinone or bromochloro- or lower alkylsubstituted hydroquinones and oxalic acid or water-soluble salts of oxalic acid in the presence of a protective colloid at temperatures between 20C and 100C. The protective colloid is generally a water-soluble gum, e.g. gum arabic, used in concentration of 1 to 15 gms/litre, and a defoaming agent e.g. octyl alcohol may also be utilized; alternatively the reaction solution may be defoamed mechanically, electrically or ultrasonically. If gold chloride is added rapidly, at greater than 500c.c. /minute, to the reducing agents, mixtures of flake and spheres are produced; slower addition provides essentially only spheres. The gold salt solution should preferably contain 1 to 50% by weight of gold, and an excess of reducing agent should be present. Metallizing compositions A metallizing composition used in the formation of printed circuits comprises 84% gold powder, 2% glass frit composed of lead oxide and boron trioxide and 14% organic liquid vehicle. The composition is applied to a substrate and fired.
