Abstract

1355143 Cavity resonators VARIAN ASSOCIATES 11 Feb 1972 [24 March 1971] 6447/72 Heading H1W [Also in Division G1] A microwave resonant cavity is formed by folding a printed circuit board. As shown, the invention is applied to the cavity of an electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer of the kind in which a low frequency modulation is applied to the polarizing field. The sheet (e.g. of epoxy glass) is provided with circular apertures 24, 25 and is printed on the side which eventually lies on the outside of the cavity with the pattern shown. This includes two printed spirals 17, 18 to which modulating current is applied. The opposite (inner) side of the sheet is coated overall except in the areas opposite the modulation coils where a pattern of small holes is provided in order to improve penetration of the magnetic field into the cavity (Fig. 2, not shown). The sheet is cut and folded along the lines 26, 27, 28, the inner conductive coating being left intact and a soldered seam being used to join the edges 29. The cavity is completed by the insertion of dished end members 35 one of which is provided with a coupling aperture 38 and a flange member 37 for attachment to a waveguide feeder (not shown). Tubular members 41, 42 affixed over the openings 24, 25 are provided to facilitate insertion of samples. The whole cavity is potted in a suitable insulant 44.
