Abstract

1,157,805. Making scanning coils. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 7 July, 1966 [30 July, 1965], No. 32578/65. Heading B3A. [Also in Divisions H1 and H2] A coil comprises a flexible base supporting two overlapping and mutually insulated conductive patterns, each pattern comprising a repetitive longitudinally extending rectangular waveform, one pattern being displaced relative to the other so that the longitudinal parts of the respective waveforms are staggered, the base being rolled to conform to a surface of revolution. As shown, Fig. 3, a scanning coil for a television pick-up or image reproducing tube comprises a strip 1 of flexible insulating material on opposite sides of which are formed patterns of "printed" conductors 2. The pattern on the upper surface comprises the rectangular waveform indicated by the full lines, and the pattern on the lower surface comprises a similar waveform displaced longitudinally as indicated by the broken lines. The conductors of the two patterns are interconnected at the points marked 3 and provided with input terminals 4 to form a plurality of virtual, alternately poled, coils. The strip is then wound into a cylinder with the points X and Y in register to form a pair of saddle coils. The turns of the wound strip are insulated from one another either by coating with insulating material before winding or by interleaving a strip of insulating material. The length of each successive cycle of the waveform may be increased to compensate for the increase in circumference of the cylinder as the winding proceeds. Locating holes may be provided to aid registration of the turns of the coil. A single insulating strip may be provided with two sets of conductors arranged to form the line and field deflection coils for a C.R.T. Electrostatic screens may be provided between the tube and coils, and/or between the sets of coils, by printed areas on the strip. The strip may be arcuate so that when wound it forms a conical coil. The base may consist of more than one layer of insulating material and the coils may be used for resolvers and motors.
