Abstract

1354789 Feeding webs ENGLISH NUMBERING MACHINES Ltd 26 May 1972 [21 July 1971] 34202/71 Heading B8R In a machine in which a portion of web or filamentary material, e.g. wire, string, tape, film or ribbon is unwound from a spool 1 having an apertured core 5 upon each movement of an actuating means 18, a device is provided for sensing the depletion of the web or filamentary material, the device comprising a sensing member 7 resiliently urged towards the core 5 and having an end portion 11 adapted to co-operate with an aperture 6 in the core when the aperture is uncovered upon depletion, to move an inhibiting means for mechanically preventing further movement of the actuating means 18 and thus preventing further operation of the machine. As shown, the sensing member 7 is pivoted to a control lever 9 fixed on a shaft 10 rotatably supported on a machine frame. A pin 14 on the shaft engages a boss 16 on a stop arm 17 resiliently biased by a spring 15. Upon depletion, the end portion 11 engages a core aperture 6 and further rotation of the spool 1 moves the sensing member 7 tangentially relative to the core, thereby rotating the lever 9 clockwise and moving the stop arm 17 into the path of the actuating lever 18 thus preventing its movement to an operative position. Alternatively, the sensing member may be pivoted directly to the machine frame and displace a linearly movable inhibiting means into the path of the lever 18, Fig. 4 (not shown). The inhibiting means may additionally trip an electrical switch or a mechanical flag to indicate depletion. The end portion 11 may be connected to the sensing member 7 via a resilient coupling.
