Abstract

1354763 Laminates MICHELIN & CIE (COMPAGNIE GENERALE DES ETABS MICHELIN) 19 April 1971 [10 Feb 1970] 21343/71 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] Laminates may be prepared by bonding to metals, particularly brass such as brass-plated steel cable reinforcement for tyres, vulcanizable compositions comprising (a) 100 parts by weight of an ethylene/propylene/non-conjugated diene terpolymer elastomer; (b) a vulcanizing system comprising 1-10 parts by weight of sulphur, 5 to 15 parts by weight of zinc oxide or cadmium oxide, up to 5 parts by weight of tetraalkyl thiuram disulphide and/or up to 5 parts by weight of a dialkyl dithiocarbamate of a metal other than one of Group Ia or IIa; and (c) 0À5 to 10 parts by weight of (1) a compound of a metal of Group Ia or IIa capable of forming with the vulcanizing system during vulcanization a dialkyl dithiocarbamate of a metal of Group Ia or IIa, provided that the mixture does not contain 2-mercaptobenzothiazole when the compound is calcium oxide, or (2) a dialkyl dithiocarbamate of a metal of Group Ia or IIa. The compositions may be vulcanized and bonded to metal reinforcements in the manufacture of tyres, conveyer belts and conduits. Examples describe the bonding to brass coated steel cable tyre reinforcements of compositions comprising ethylene/propylene/1,4-hexadiene terpolymer, extender oil, carbon black and zinc oxide together with (1, 4 to 6 and 8) barium oxide, sulphur, tetramethyl or tetraethyl thiuram monosulphide and zinc diethyl dithiocarbamate or mercaptobenzothiazole, (2) as in (1) wherein the barium oxide is replaced by calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, sodium phosphate or sodium acetate, or (3) as in (1) wherein the barium oxide is replaced by barium, calcium or magnesium diethyl dithiocarbamates; and (7) as in (1) wherein the terpolymer is replaced by ethylidene norbornene or dicyclopentadiene terpolymers.
