Abstract

1354636 Steering vehicles COVENTRY CLIMAX ENGINES Ltd 30 Jan 1973 [4 Feb 1972] 5252/72 Heading B7H A steering arrangement for an industrial lift truck includes a steering box 39 having a drop arm 44 to which is connected a pair of racks 32, each rack 32 steering a wheel 11 of the truck. The geometry of the arrangement is chosen so that the steered wheels 11 turn through different angles, the wheel 11 at the inside of the turn turning more than the wheel 11 at the outside of the turn. As described each wheel 11 is driven by an electric motor and gear-box 12, each wheel assembly 11, 12 being mounted in a wheel carrier 15. Each carrier 15 is mounted for rotation about a vertical axis by means of shaft 19 and bearings 23, 25, and pinions 21 fixed to each shaft 20 mesh with racks 32 slidable in housings 31. The inner ends of each rack 32 are connected by eye-bolts 34 to the drop arm 44 of the steering box 39 which is of the screw and lever type. The input shaft 38 of the steering box 39 is connected to the steering wheel (not shown) via shafts 40, 41 and joints 42. The steering arrangement may be power assisted. The ends of each rack 32 are formed as a piston 32b having a seal 32a and each housing 31 is formed as a cylinder into which pressure fluid may be introduced through port 31a. Supply of pressure fluid to either of the cylinders is controlled by a valve 61 mounted on the drop arm 44. The valve spool 49 is connected to the output shaft 39a of the steering box 39 and is operated by the lost-motion allowed between bolts 64, 65 on the drop arm 44 and a lug 53 on the output shaft 39a.
