Abstract
1354167 Mixing apparatus P FOUCAULT 28 July 1971 35499/71 Heading B1C Apparatus for mixing fluids comprises two coaxial tubular members 14, 15 relatively and/or oppositely rotatable at different speeds and respectively carrying a body 26 with blades 25 and cap 48, and a head 23, 40 with blades 41. Fluids are supplied by pumps P1, P2 through member 15 and coaxial pipe 46 to chamber C formed between head 23, 40 and cap 48 and swept by blades 41; the volume of chamber C is calculated so that it forms an expansion chamber where liquids become atomised. The mixture then passes through a narrow annular homogenizing space L and through apertures 53 in cap 48 to a chamber 28 swept by blades 25, and is collected in an annular channel 32 from which it is removed by pump P, the capacity of which is greater than the combined capacities of P1, P2 so that chamber C is under reduced pressure. In modifications the walls of the homogenizing space L may be frusto-conical (see Fig. 2, not shown) so that its width may be -altered by axial adjustment of the cap (48A) and/or head (23A); the flared upper end 45 of the pipe 46 may be replaced by a domeshaped lenticular member (61, Fig. 3 not shown); three or more fluids could be mixed by means of additional pipe(s) coaxial with 14, 15. Applications are the mixing and homogenizing of liquids (which may carry powders) in suspension, gases, or liquids with gases, and the scrubbing of gases.
