Abstract

1354006 Drawing sheet glass CORNING GLASS WORKS 25 Nov 1971 [27 Nov 1970] 54793/71 Heading C1M To control the cooling of newly formed sheet glass S drawn from a melt G by rollers 18 in a forming zone 14 and which while at an elevated temperature passes through a transition zone 12 to an annealing zone 16, the transition zone 12 includes a housing 10 which has a wall member 28 arranged to face the newly formed sheet glass S and which is composed of a material having high thermal conductivity and emissivity and low thermal expansion, the back surface of the wall member and the housing forming a confined passage 48 for a high velocity stream of cooling air in a direction which is longitudinal to the draw of the glass sheet and in which the rate of air flow can be varied in different segments across the width of the passage if required. As shown, the air flow is in a direction counter to the direction of sheet draw and is provided by air being drawn into the housing 10 through an inlet manifold 40 with filter (42) by vacuum exhaust ducts 54 connected to outlet openings (50) across the width of the housing 10, each duct 54 having an adjustable valve 56 and leading via a main exhaust header 58 to an exhaust fan (62). A heater block 64 is slidably mounted on rails (66) and can be moved to adjust width of passage 48. Heating elements (74) on block 64 can be used in start up operations or to stabilize the draw if there is a glass break-up. The wall member 28 is preferably of SiC slabs. Refractory support members 20, 22 may also have cooling devices across the width of the sheet. Patent Specification 1,277,397 is referred to.
