Abstract

1353847 Stabilizing blood sera E R SQUIBB & SONS INC 14 March 1972 [25 March 1971] 11907/72 Heading A5B The formation of particles in blood serum when it is shaken may be prevented by a process comprising (a) adjusting the pH of the serum to 5.2-5.6, (b) contacting 1 volume of serum with 0.5 to 5 volumes of a linear halogenated hydrocarbon at a temperature not exceeding 35‹C so as to form a proteinaceous precipitate, and (c) separating the precipitate from the remainder of the serum. In a preferred process, the pH of human serum is adjusted with acetic acid to the prescribed range; the serum is shaken to form a preliminary precipitate; this precipitate is removed: the remaining serum is contacted with methylene chloride, chloroform or carbon tetrachloride; the resultant mixture is centrifuged; the organic solvent, serum and precipitate are separated; any remaining solvent is removed from the serum by agitation at reduced pressure and the serum is neutralized with NaOH, treated with kaolin and filtered.
