Abstract
1353680 α - Branched isocyanates; carbamates BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK AG 16 Sept 1971 [17 Sept 1970] 43121/71 Heading C2C Isocyanates of the general Formula I wherein R<SP>1</SP> denotes -H, -CH 3 , -C 2 H 5 , -CH 2 Cl, or -CH 2 Br; R<SP>2</SP> denotes -CH 3 , -CH 2 Cl, -C 2 H 5 , cyclohexyl or phenyl and R<SP>3</SP> denotes, ethynyl, vinyl, -CH 2 Cl, -CH 2 Br or -CH 2 -Y-R<SP>4</SP>, Y being -O- or -S- and R<SP>4</SP> being C 1-5 alkyl, cyclohexyl, benzyl or phenyl, are prepared by reacting the corresponding primary amine or a hydrohalide salt thereof with phosgene in an inert solvent or suspension agent. The reaction may be carried out at 50‹ to 170‹ C. and at atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure in the presence of HCl. A stoichiometric excess of phosgene may be used. Those isocyanates of general Formula I wherein R<SP>3</SP> denotes ethynyl or -CH 2 -S-R<SP>4</SP> are novel compounds. Carbamates having herbicidal action are obtained by reaction of the isocyanates with phenols. Examples 4-8 describe the preparation of many α-branched isocyanates and Examples 9 and 10 give the preparation of many bis-carbamates, mainly using 3-methoxycarbamoylamidophenol.
