1353581 Process for triazine derivatives LILLY INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [17 April 1970 25 June 1970] 46735/73 and 46736/73 Divided out of 1351603-Cog 30883/70 Heading C2C A process for preparing compounds of the general formula wherein X is halogen and R is linked through a ring C atom to the triazine ring, and A represents -O-, -S- or -N(R 1 )-, in which R 1 is H, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, hydroxy-lower alkyl, carboxy-lower alkyl, phenyl or phenyl-lower alkyl and R 2 represents one or more substituents independently selected from H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower acyl, phenyl, nitro, amino and halogen or, in the case where A is -S-, R 2 may also be a 2-chloro-4-thienyl group, the term "lower" meaning groups with up to 6 C atoms, comprises reacting a cyanuric halide with a compound R-H, or a metallated derivative thereof, which does not contain any nitro-substituent and subsequently nitrating and, if necessary, rehalogenating the resultant product when a nitrosubstituted compound is required. Amongst numerous examples the compounds 2-(thien-2<SP>1</SP>- yl)-4,6-dichloro-s-triazine and 2-(1<SP>1</SP>-methyl-4<SP>1</SP>- nitropyrrol-2<SP>1</SP>-yl)-4,6-dichloro-s-triazine are prepared. 2-(thien-2<SP>1</SP>-yl)-4,6-dioxo-s-triazine is obtained from the corresponding 4,6-dichloro-derivative by treatment with hydrochloric acid. 2 - (41 - nitrothein - 2<SP>1</SP> - yl) - 4,6 - dioxo - striazine is obtained by treating 2-(thien-2<SP>1</SP>-yl)- 4,6-dichloro-s-triazine with sulphuric/nitric acid mixture. 2 - (1<SP>1</SP> - methylpyrrol - 21 - yl) - 4,6 - dioxo - striazine is obtained by hydrolysis of the dichlorocompound with hydrochloric acid. 2 - (11 - methyl - 4<SP>1</SP> - nitropyrrol - 21 - yl) - 4,6- dioxo-s-triazine is obtained by nitration of the last mentioned product.
