Abstract

1353113 High energy density cell with Li anode E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 3 Feb 1972 [3 Feb 1971] 5108/72 Heading H1B In a cell having a lithium anode and a cathode comprising a compound selected from metal sulphides, metal fluorides and mixtures thereof, the metal being selected from iron, copper, nickel and mixtures thereof, the electrolyte has a conductivity of at least 1 x 10<SP>-3</SP> ohm<SP>-1</SP> cm<SP>-1</SP> and comprises a solvent consisting essentially of from 100-50% by weight of dioxolane and complementally from 0-50% by weight of an ether selected from aliphatic ethers and cycloaliphatic carbohydric ethers having a molecular weight no greater than 165 and a dissolved salt selected from salts having the formula MSCN and MCIO 4 where M is a cation of Li, Na or K. The tendency for the electrolyte to polymerize can be reduced by the addition of a small amount of a tertiary nitrogen base such as dimethylisoxazole, pyridine or triethylamine. Examples of the cycloaliphatic carbohydric ethers are: ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, butylene oxide, dioxane, tetrahydropyran, dihydrofurane and tetrahydrofurane. Examples of aliphatic ethers are diethyl ether, 1,2-dimethoxyethane, 1,2- diethoxyethane, the dimethyl ether of diethylene glycol and the diethyl ether of diethylene glycol. In one example of cell the cathode consists of CUS and the electrolyte comprises, by weight, dioxolane 85% and LiClO 4 15%. In another example of cell having a cathode of CUS, the electrolyte comprises, by weight, dioxolane 45%, 1,2-dimethoxyethane 45% and LiClO 4 10%. Other preferred cathode materials are: FeS, NiS and Ni 7 S 6 .
