1353104 Welding by pressure V S LIFSHITS V I GRIGORIEV G N PETROV and D S PAPKOV 7 July 1971 31820/71 Heading B3R In a flash-butt welding process for welding together two pipes a shaft member 5 is locked to one of the pipes 1 at two spaced points by clamps 2, 3, the section of the pipe 1 between the clamps is compressed and the corresponding length of the shaft stretched to store potential energy, the second pipe is moved into light contact with the end of the pipe 1 and clamped to the shaft 5 by means of the clamp 4, current is passed between the pipes to cause arcing between the abutting ends and the potential energy then released to effect flash-butt welding of the pipes.
