Abstract

1353007 Fastening panels to supports ROLLSROYCE (COMPOSITE MATERIALS) Ltd 15 July 1971 [16 July 1970] 34588/70 Heading B7W A panel for example an aircraft floor is removably secured to a support 16 by a fastener in the form of a bolt 18, the panel consisting of first and second skins 2, 6 of material reinforced by fibres, on each side of a cellular core 4, with a hole through the first skin 2 and the core 4 and a smaller coaxial hole through the second skin 6, reinforced by a flat annulus 8 bonded to the outer face of the second skin 6 around the smaller hole and by an insert consisting of a tubular portion 12 lining the hole in the core 4, an external flange 10 bonded to the outer face of the first skin 2 and an internal flange 14 bonded to the inner face of the second skin 6 around the smaller hole, the annulus 8 engaging the support, and the fastener including a shank 24 passing through the respective holes in the internal flange 14, the second skin 6 and the annulus into the support, and a portion 20 having a clamping face engaging the internal flange 14 via a washer 22 and exerting a clamping force on the internal flange 14, second skin 6 and annulus 8 against the support 16, the said portion 20 having a radial clearance within the tubular portion 12. Adhesive 26 may fill the broken pores of the cellular core material 4 surrounding the tubular portion 12 which may receive a plug 28 having a top surface lying flush with the top surface of the outer flange 10. The tubular portion 12 may be frusto-conical, diverging upwards and may not be circular in plan view.
