Abstract
1352635 Matrix displays BURROUGHS CORP 19 April 1971 [23 March 1970 19 June 1970] 23486/71 Heading G5C A display system comprises a panel including an array of discharge cells with two associated groups of conductors 11 ... 17, 111-1 ... 113-w and means for sequentially applying potentials to groups of selected cells with a blanking interval between successive applications of sufficient duration to avoid visible excitation of non-selected cells. The panel comprises a housing containing an array of apertured strip cathodes 111, 112, 113 each fourth electrode being interconnected to form 3 groups, wire control anodes 11 to 17 above the cathodes and parallel wire scanning anodes 11<SP>1</SP> to 17<SP>1</SP> below the cathodes. The panel includes a reset cathode 102 and keep alive anode and cathode 18, 101. As shown in Fig. 3, the control and scanning anodes are maintained at a potential V B via resistors 21 to 27 and 31 to 37, respectively. Input data is applied to terminals 40A ... 40n of a character generator 40 including decoding, encoding and storage means. The output of the generator provides sequential parallel signals to the control anodes via NPN anode driving transistors 41 ... 47, diodes 51 ... 57 and Zener diodes 61 ... 67. As each column of signals is applied to the transistors a blanking control circuit including amplifiers 84, 88 operates transistor 80 to delay the application of the signals to anodes 11 ... 17 to allow selected display cells to become initially ionized and the ionization of previously energized display cells to fall sufficiently to prevent undesired energization. The three groups of cathodes are controlled by cathode drivers 151 ... 153 connected to flip-flops 180, 190. In the event of a circuit failure overheating is prevented by a capacitative coupling circuit including capacitors 170, 170, resistors 160, 163 and diodes 174, 175.
