Abstract

1352568 Making expanded metal beams H WATANABE 30 April 1971 [30 April 1970] 12504/71 Headings B3A B3E and B3W An expanded structural beam is cold formed from a metal strip (Figs. 3A, 2A and 1A in plan, successive cross-sections, and elevation respectively) by initial flanging rolls 12-14; is provided with longitudinal staggered slits 5 and 6 by slitting rolls 15; is expanded laterally first by a set of small diameter rolls 9, and then by further flanging rolls 16-19 (Figs. 1B, 2B and 3B) to form a lattice 2 between the edges of the product; is straightened by a roller leveller 20, and shaped by rolls 21 and 22; and is finally embossed on the lattice 2 by rolls 11 (Fig. 8) provided with interengaging embossing projections 10b, 10a, to strengthen the beam. The lower of the slitting rolls 15 rotates at a speed approximately corresponding to that of the strip, whereas the upper one is adjustable in speed in order to vary the length of the slits 5 and 6. The upper roll has blades 7 separated by notches 8. By suitably choosing the profiles of the forming rolls, beams of channel form, C-shape, top hat section, #-shape, Z-shape, or H-shape may be produced. The expanding rolls may be arranged to expand the lattice such that the angle between the lattice members and the longitudinal edges of the beam are as high as 35 degrees.
