The plate 42 has keyhole slots 39, 41 whereby it can be attached to the support plate 36 of the type chain 12 by engagement with headed pins 38 on the plate 36, the plate 42 being moved rightwards, Figs. 1, 4 after attachment until its end 48 abuts a fixed locating block 14. A cover (65), Fig. 2 (not shown) encloses the spools 66, 68. Mounted on the locating block 14 is a capstan 16, Fig. 4, which engages the run E of the ribbon and wraps the ribbon around the guide roller 78 as shown, Fig. 4. A pressure roller 84, the shaft 94 of which is slidable in slots in the plate 42 and is pressed downwardly by spring-urged arms 92 mounted on the block 14, engages the capstan 16 to maintain the ribbon 34 in contact therewith. If the tension in the ribbon increases due to jamming, the ribbon part E exerts a force pushing the cartridge away from the block 14, opening micro-switch 114 to stop the drive to the capstan 16 or change an electrical signal to signal to indicate disengagement of the ribbon from the capstan.
