Abstract

1351495 Grignard-type reagents NATIONAL PATENT DEVELOPMENT CORP 22 April 1971 [12 May 1970] 10844/71 Headings C2C and C2J A Grignard reagent of general formula Mg(OR 1 ) 2 .ZRMgX in which R 1 is tetrahydrofurfuryl, dialkylaminoalkyl in which each alkyl group is C 1 -C 6 , or R 2 O(CH 2 ) m - where R 2 is C 1 -C 6 alkyl or C 2 -C 12 alkoxyalkyl, m is 2, 3 or 4, R is a hydrocarbyl or heterocyclic group having N, O or S as hetero atom (especially 2- pyridyl or 2-quinolyl), Z is a number from ¢ to 6 and X is Cl, Br or I is prepared by one of the following methods: (1) by reacting Mg(OR 1 ) 2 , Mg and RX, usually in a molar ratio of 1 : Z : Z, in a hydrocarbon solvent optionally together with a small amount of an ether; (2) Mg(OR 1 ) 2 + ZRMgX in ethers or ether/hydrocarbon mixtures; (3) in an ether and/or hydrocarbon; or (4) (Z + 1)Mg + 2R 1 OH + ZRX. The compounds, many of which are specified, are soluble in hydrocarbon solvents. Alcohols are prepared by reacting a carboxylic acid ester, anhydride, chloride, bromide or iodide or an aldehyde or ketone with a Grignard reagent of the above general formula and hydrolysing the reaction mixture. In the example, C 6 H 5 CH = CHC(CH 3 ) 2 OH is obtained by reacting ethyl cinnamate and Mg[O(CH 2 ) 4 OCH 3 ] 2 . 1¢CH 3 MgBr in tetrahydrofuran followed by hydrolysis with water.
