1494443 Polyarylenemethylenes VSESOJUZ ELEKTROTEKHNICHE INST IM VI LENINA 18 Jan 1975 2279/75 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] Polyarylenemethylenes of formula where Ar<SP>1</SP> and Ar<SP>2</SP> are and m + n is from 2 to 30, are prepared by reacting compounds of formula where Ar is as for the Formulµ II-V above, X is a chloromethyl group or an alkoxymethyl group and k is 1 or 2, with naphthalene, diphenyl, diphenyl ether or diphenyl methane in the presence of a Firedel-Crafts catalyst in a molar ratio of 20-98 : 80-2, respectively. In examples chloromethylnaphthalene is reacted with naphthalene, diphenyl and diphenyl ether; 1 - chloromethyl - 4 - phenoxybenzene is reacted with diphenyl ether; 1-ethoxymethyl- 4-phenoxybenzene is reacted with diphenyl ether; methoxyphenoxybenzene is reacted with diphenyl ether; 1 - chloromethyl - 2 - benzylbenzene is reacted with diphenyl ether, diphenyl and naphthalene; and p, p-di(chloromethyl)diphenyl ether is reacted with diphenyl ether; the catalysts used are stannic chloride and aluminium chloride.
