Abstract

1351463 Azodicarbonamide derivatives MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 19 April 1971 [17 April 1970] 18564/70 Headings C2C and C2P [Also in Divisions C3 and G2] The invention comprises water-soluble azodicarbonamide derivatives in which at least one of the amido nitrogen atoms has covalently bonded to it a grouping having a centre of positive charge, the derivative having associated with it at least one negatively charged moiety sufficient to impart electrical neutrality. The centre of positive charge may be a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium or a ternary sulphonium grouping. Suitable compounds are of formula in which Z, Z<SP>1</SP>, G and G<SP>1</SP> are each hydrogen or an aliphatic, alicyclic, aromatic or heterocyclic group, or Z + G and/or Z<SP>1</SP> + G<SP>1</SP> together with the N form a possibly substituted 5 or 6 membered heterocyclic ring, at least one such group or structure containing one or more quarternary ammonium or phosphonium or ternary sulphonium grouping, together with one or more centres of negative charge (which may be part of the same structure, i.e. a betaine form, or separate anions) to impart electrical neutrality. Quaternary ammonium compounds of this type may be obtained by condensing an azodicarboxylate with an N,N-disubstituted diamine and quaternizing; other compounds may be prepared analogously. The compounds of the invention are antifogging agents in photography (see Division G2) and may be used as blowing agents in polymer compositions.
