1351305 Umbrellas YUNG KWONG YUEN 13 Aug 1971 38139/71 Addition to 1351195 Heading A4P An umbrella comprises a stick 2, ribs 5, struts 17 a runner 6 fixed to a slide 7 slidable on the stick, a handle 4 and an operating member 9 with an operating part 13a displaceable transversely of the axis of the stick by finger or thumb pressure of the hand holding the umbrella to produce relative axial displacement of slide 7 along the stick axis through a distance which a does not exceed the distanced transversed by said operating part but which by virtue of the elongation of the slide 7 and the struts 17 being pivoted to the ribs 5 sufficiently near to the notch is sufficient fully to open the umbrella, and b is longer during the first half movement of the operating part to produce the main displacement of the ribs than during the second half movement of the operating part when the ribs are being flexed and the cover tensioned. Auxiliary struts 16 and a runner 18 slidable on slide 7 may be provided. The slide 7 and stick 2 may be rendered non-rotatable by means of a pin 10 slidable in a slot 8 or by use of a square, hexagonal or other non- circular section stick and bore through slide 7. The operating member may comprise a lever 9 pivoted at pin 10 and having a pin 11 guided in a slot 12, there being a spring 14 to retain the umbrella in the closed position. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown) the operating member comprises a lever 9 pivoted to a collar (21) on slide 7 and to a radius rod (23) pivoted to a member 3 attached to the handle 4, a spring (25) becoming tensioned when the umbrella is closed. In a third embodiment, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the operating member comprises a link (9a) pivoted to slide 7 and to a member (27) slidable along a bar (26) running transverse to the stick. In a fourth embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), the operating member comprises a pin 10 on slide 7 and slidable in a slot 8 in the stick and a member having a cam arm (34) with a arcurate slot (35), in which pin 10 also slides, and a part (33) fixed to arm (34) and slidable along an arm (36) set transverse to the stick, a spring catch (37) for retaining the operating member in a fixed position.
