Abstract

1350776 Life rafts OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 21 April 1971 [22 April 1970] 10389/71 Heading B7A [Also in Divisions F2 F4 B1 and C1] A cellular matrix having a diversity of applications is formed of glass-ceramic tubes 22 fused together to provide a series of smoothwalled longitudinal passages the walls of which have an average coefficient of lineal thermal expansion of about -12 to +12 x 10<SP>-7</SP>/‹C. (0-300‹ C.) and a thermal conductivity at 400‹ C. of less than 0À01 cal/cm/sec/cm<SP>2</SP>/‹C., wherein the inner diameter (defined in the specification) of said passages is at least 3 times the wall thickness through portions of said walls common to adjacent fused tubes. Preferably the matrix has an open frontal crosssectional area of at least 60%. The matrix passages may be open or closed at one or both ends. Typical tube dimensions are, inner diameter 0À1 inch, and wall thickness 0À03 to 0À002 inch. The use of larger tubes up to 3 inches diameter is mentioned. When fused together (after suitably pressurizing the tube bores), the tubes when all parallel, form open-ended passages of generally hexagonal cross-section as shown in Fig. 6. Alternatively in another arrangement where alternate layers of tubes are at right angles to each other (Fig. 14) the tubes when fused together, form open-ended passageways of rectangular or square cross-section. With the tubes closed at both ends, the matrix structure may be utilized as buoyancy material in a liferaft.
