Abstract
1350377 Wind -speed and -direction indicators PLESSEY CO Ltd 18 June 1971 [30 May 1970] 26210/70 Headings G1N and G1R An instrument for measuring the direction and speed of the wind has a rigid stem 2 supporting a hollow perforated drag body, e.g. in the form of a sphere or cylinder 1, the stem being supported for universal movement about a point 3 by means of a gimbal mounting 6 and being attached to a preloaded tension link 5 anchored at 20 to frame 12, the wind acting on the cylinder 1 to tilt the stem against the restoring force of the tension link and the resulting position of the stem in two mutually perpendicular directions being sensed by respective rotary-plate variable capacitors 16 to vary the frequency of (L-C) oscillators in a measurement circuit (not shown). The angular deflection of the stem is a substantially linear function of the wind speed. An adjustable balance weight 7 ensures that the centre of gravity of the stem-drag body-weight assembly may be made to coincide with point 3, thereby permitting replacement of the cylinder 1 by a drag body of different weight. A silicone fluid within housing 13 acts as a movement damping medium, a lubricant, and a dielectric.
