Abstract

1350368 Medical electrode TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc 23 Aug 1972 [30 Aug 1971] 39307/72 Heading A5R [Also in Division B5] A disposable electrode (10), Fig. 1, (not shown) comprises a rigid conducting member 12 having a projecting portion 22 a conducting disc 26, and an insulating member (36), Fig. 5 (not shown) supporting the conducting members 12, 26 and defining, with the disc 26, a cavity (42) for receiving electrolytic paste and a cavity rim (54), the insulating member (36) engaging the conducting member 26 and the projecting portion 22 such that it is releasably engageable by an electrical contact (24) when the cavity rim (54) is engaged with a patients' body. The disc 26 comprises a lamination formed of a layer 32 up to 0.0002 inches thick of an electro-chemically active material such as silver chloride bonded with a layer 30 of silver or silver-nickel alloy having a hardness greater than 90 diamond pyramid hardness and wherein the proportion by weight of nickel is 0.3%. The disc 26 is welded to the conducting member 12 by a weld 34 which has a diameter of about .032 inches and is spaced a distance of about .032 inches from the edge of the disc 26 which has a diameter of about .5 inches. The insulating member (36) has, disposed on the cavity rim (54), an adhesive (52) for attaching the electrode (10) to the patient's body, said adhesive (52) being protected by a layer (56) of paper or fabric material. An annular groove (40) in the insulating member (36) receives the rim 20 of a disc-like portion of the conducting member 12 and the rim 28 of the disc 26 such that the weld 34 is enclosed in the groove (40). The insulating member (36) is formed from a thermoplastics material body having a shoulder (46), Fig. 4 (not shown) and a neck (48): The assembled disc 26 and the conducting member 12 are rested on the shoulder (46) and the body (36) pressed with a die (50) and heated to about 350‹F to fuse the thermoplastic material and seal it to the rims of the disc 26 and the conducting member 12. In use, the cavity (42) is filled with an electrolytic paste comprising aqueous sodium chloride, the protective layer (56) is removed and the electrode (10) adhered to the patients' skin.
