Abstract

1349715 Attaching spiked plates A MOTTA 20 April 1971 [28 April 1970] 10111/71 Heading B4C [Also in Division F2] Two wooden members 33, e.g. members of a picture frame, are joined together by a flat metal angle plate 2, having teeth projecting from its plane at right angles, by a machine which uses a feed belt 1 of plates 2 joined at their ends by integral strips 4, each plate 2 being separated from the strips 4 by punching, and driven into the members 33. The strips 4 of the feed belt 1 pass along guide slots 31 of a table 28. A movable assembly comprises beams 13, 14 connected together by slide rods 12, the beam 14 carrying a cylinder 15 containing a piston 16 connected by a rod 19 to a punch 21. With the members 33 positioned against stops 32, the upper chamber 48 of the cylinder is vented, allowing the assembly to descend until a pad 34 on the beam 13 engages the members 33. Then the lower chamber 49 is pressurized to drive the punch upwards to separate a plate 2 from the belt 1 and force its teeth into the members 33. As the assembly is raised again, a roller 43 on the beam 13 rocks a lever 42 about a fulcrum 41 so that a pawl 46 advances the feed belt 1 sufficiently to bring the next plate 2 into position above the punch 21. The machine is claimed in Specification 1,349,716.
