Abstract

1349301 Extruding foamed materials COSDEN OIL & CHEMICAL CO 28 May 1971 [8 June 1970] 17975/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] An apparatus for continuously forming moulded foamed bodies from a thermoplastic polymer, comprises an extruder having a mixing chamber with means for mixing thermoplastic polymer and a foaming agent and extruding the mixture therefrom, means for heating the mixing chamber, means for introducing a foaming agent into the heated mixture in said chamber, and an outlet nozzle through which the mixture can be extruded to expand as a foamed extrudate, the apparatus further comprising a moulding device comprising upper and lower moulding elements spaced apart, the outlet nozzle being positioned between the moulding elements so as to be able to receive the extruded foam, means for actuating the moulding elements to compress the foam between the moulding elements to form a compressed moulded foamed product, and means for cooling the moulding elements to set the thermoplastic foam therebetween in its compressed moulded shape. Moulded foamed bodies, are continuously made by heating and extruding a mixture of a thermoplastic polymer with a foaming agent to form a homogeneous plastic foam by expanding the foam directly into a moulding device and then compressing the extruded softened plastic foam between moulding surfaces to continuously shape the foam to the desired form and density while retaining its foamy internal structure, and then finally cooling to set the moulded thermoplastic polymer while it is between the mould surfaces. Figs. 1-3 show a track moulding device and a track mould respectively in which polymer particles are fed via 10 to chamber 13 where they are foamed by means of foaming agent fed under pressure from 24 and extruded from nozzle 26 as sheet 28 which is passed between track mould having moulding elements 30, 32 mounted on continuous belts 34, 36. Refrigerant is fed via 50 and withdrawn at 52 to cool jacket 48, and elements 30, 32 may be heated by 54, e.g. with steam. Sheet 28 can be cut into sections 29 by die 62.
