Abstract

1349123 Burning furnace gases L F OLESEN and V A OLESEN 1 Sept 1972 40774/72 Heading F4B Apparatus for burning combustible material in the exhaust gas of a furnace, incinerator or the like before it is discharged into the atmosphere comprises a tubular member 30 defining a combustion chamber, through which the exhaust gas is passed, a burner 36 adjacent the inlet to heat the incoming gas to its combustion temperature and a cooling jacket 32 surrounding the chamber to maintain the temperature sufficiently low to prevent damage from the combustion temperature in the chamber. To prevent particulate material building up on the inner surface 60 of the chamber it may be coated with PTFE. Air is admitted at 58 and after passing through the combustion chamber the gas is filtered before passing to the outlet flue 42. The water jacket 32 has a series of internal baffles 60 to form a number of substantially independent jackets. All internal surfaces of the jackets may be coated with PTFE to prevent deposits. A steam generator coil may be provided in the combustion chamber connected either in series with the water jacket or separately therefrom. The apparatus may be mounted on top of a furnace or incinerator supported on a tripod (Fig. 1, not shown). Or it may be positioned horizontally on the ground, the exhaust gas then being drawn through it by a blower (Fig. 4, not shown). A further blower may be provided in the outlet flue.
