Abstract

1349017 Radiant burners NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 13 Oct 1971 [30 Dec 1970] 47693/71 Heading F4T [Also in Division F1] Exhaust gases in an I.C. exhaust gas afterburning system 10 are heated by a flame formed by air/fuel mixture flowing through a porous wall 16b, e.g. sintered porcelain or multi-layered stainless steel mesh, and burnt in a chamber 14a. Projections 16c, e.g. solid porcelain, on the wall 16b are heated bythe flame and cause turbulence. Mixture from a carburetter 17 is delivered by a blower 18a to a chamber 16a, Fig. 2, within the porous wall or a chamber 16<SP>1</SP>a, Fig. 4, surrounding the wall. A temperature sensor 22 controls the carburetter throttle valve 21c through a controller 21a and servo-motor 21b to provide a predetermined temperature in the chamber 14a. A spark plug 23a ignites the mixture and secondary air may be injected into the exhaust gases upstream of the wall 16b.
