Abstract

1348907 Paper-like films HITACHI CHEMICAL CO Ltd 20 Oct 1971 [21 Oct 1970] 48732/71 Heading B5B A synthetic resin film paper is made by extruding into film form a resin mixture comprising (i) 100 parts by weight of a styrene resin which is polystyrene, a styrene copolymer containing a major proportion of styrene, or a mixture of a major proportion of polystyrene or said styrene copolymer and a minor proportion of another amorphous polymer, and (ii) 2 to 45 parts by weight of a polyolefin resin which is polyethylene, polypropylene or polyvinylchloride and stretching the film in a first stretching step at a temperature at which the film will stretch and which is below a temperature 5‹ C. higher than the transition temperature # T of said film. The term "polyolefin resin" is defined as including polyethylene, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride. Desirably, the unstretched film is stretched to at least 1À3 times in the first stretching step, which is generally uniaxial, but may be multiaxial, as in a method exemplified where a flat film placed over the end of a cylinder is stretched by inflation. Second stage stretching may be effected at a temperature in the range from the transition temperature # T of the film to a temperature 25‹ C higher than said transition temperature, and the film may be stretched to at least 1À3 times in each of the first and second stretching steps, the direction of the second stretching step desirably being in a direction perpendicular to that of the first stretching step. After either stretching step, the film may be heat treated at a temperature in the range from the transition temperature # T of the film to a temperature 25‹ C. higher than said transition temperature. Film so made, on stretching, is lowered in density to form numerous fine voids within the stretched film and on the surface thereof, so that it is made opaque and white and acquires pencil writability and ink-receptivity.
