Abstract
1348809 Coating apparatus MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 10 June 1971 19981/71 Heading B2L [Also in Divisions B3 C6-C7 and F2] A porous metal tube of sintered metallic powder has its outer surface finished and dimensioned by rotary swaging or rolling which does'not smear the powder as in grinding or machining and thus a substantial part of the porosity is retained. The tube is worked without a mandrel so that its inner surface remains rough. Such tubes may be plugged at one end and used as frictionless air turns, as film decurling bars, as web or film coaters, as air clamps or air bearings for handling fibres and textiles, for applying lubicant to yarn after spinning, or as filters, flow restrictors and diffusers. The powder is chromium-nickel stainless steel of the 300 series, nickel, iron, cobalt, copper, bronze, brass, nickel-copper, titanium, zirconium, niobium, tantalum and their alloys or aluminium. For filters the powder size is in the range 40-800 microns. Blends of different powder sizes may be used. An organic binder of methyl cellulose and water or glycerin solvent are used. The mixed slurry is extruded and in the case of stainless steel sintered in a hydrogen or dissociated ammonia atmosphere at 1200-1400‹C for 2 to 3 hours. The rotary swaging is conventional and may be in two or more stages with intermediate annealing. The rolling is performed by three rollers which rotate the tube about its axis and are gradually advanced axially. Many examples are given of powder size, tube size, sintering temperature and time within the above ranges.
