Abstract
Sintered porous metal elements such as filters are made by extruding, drawing or rolling at ambient temperature a composite formed of a number of superposed layers of pastes of metal powders and binders and sintering the deformed compact. The particle size of the metal of each layer is different but the layers may be of the same metal. The binders may be paraffins, petroleum jelly, fats and synthetic plastics. According to one example two superposed layers of bronze powder and a binder of petroleum jelly and paraffin the bronze of one layer having a size of 10-30 microns and a size of 50-100 microns in the other layer is extruded and sintered in Al2O3 in H2 at 725 DEG C. In another example a composite nickel pipe is made from a nickel powder of 1-5 microns and another nickel powder of 5-16 microns using a petroleum jelly paraffin lubricant. The coarse powder paste is cast into around a central cone of an extension mould, the core is removed and the paste of fine powder is cast into the core cavity. Extrusion and sintering at 850 DEG C. is then carried out.
