Abstract

1348640 Digital measurement SCIENCE RESEARCH COUNCIL 2 Sept 1971 [4 Sept Sept 1970] 42605/70 Heading G4H [Also in Division G1] A light beam 12 (Fig. 1) e.g. from a laser, is directed by a partially transparent mirror 6 on to a wedge shaped prism 5 so that interference bands are created between light incident on one surface of the prism and light reflected from the other surface, the interference bands being photo-electrically detected. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 light is incident on the movable prism at an angle α where sine α=n sin e (where n is the refractive index of the prism and e is the angle of the prism) so that light is reflected from the top surface of the prism and also reflected perpendicularly from the bottom surface. Several photo-electric detectors may be used in a digitizing head 10 so that the direction of movement of the prism may be determined. In the embodiment of Fig. 3, for two dimensional measurement, two prisms 5A, 5B at right angles to each other are mounted on a platform 16. An object is mounted on a platform 26, a desired point on the object being then placed beneath an objective length 24. The counts in a digitizing head 28A mounted over the prism 5A and in two heads 28B, 28C mounted above prism 5B are read out and then the platform 26 is moved to bring another desired point between the objective 24, a new reading of the count then being taken. Provided no angular movement of the platform 16 occurs the counts in heads 28B, 28C will remain in step but the counts may be combined in known manner to correct for errors induced by angular deviations.
